Laser hair removal is quickly becoming the most common form of hair removal, and rightfully so! Who wouldn’t want a permanent, painless, and easy way to reduce facial and body hairs “Alopecia”?
How Does Laser Hair Removal Treatment Work?
Laser hair removal works by targeting the pigment in the hair and damaging a portion of the hair follicle. After this process is performed an average of 8-10 times, we see significant reduction in hair growth.
How to Prepare for Laser Hair Removal: 5 Expert Tips
Whilst laser hair removal is incredibly safe, here are some tips and tricks to achieve the best and safest results.
- Keep sun exposure to a minimum.
We all love going to the beach and laying out in the sun, but did you know that part of the protection processes our skin goes through when exposed to the sun is for the production of pigment creation cells (melanocytes) to increase? This is what darkens the colour of our skin. However, as the laser is attracted to melanin, this puts the patient at a high risk of experiencing adverse reactions during laser treatments. So please, wear SPF & cover up for 2 weeks on either side of your laser treatments. - Shave the area 24 hours prior to laser treatments.
No more waxing! How exciting! We require areas that are about to have laser treatment to be free of hair on the surface of the skin. This allows the laser’s energy to travel down to the hair follicle for a more effective treatment. Remember, you are strictly shaving during your laser hair removal journey. Ensure you have not waxed, plucked, or used hair removal creams 4 weeks prior to starting your hair removal journey. - Relax post-treatment!
What a great excuse to skip the gym today! After your laser hair removal treatment, you will experience a little bit of residual heat buildup in the area. To allow this to soothe quickly, we advise you not to participate in any heat-inducing activities for 24 hours after treatment. This includes heavy exercise, saunas/steam rooms and hot showers. We also advise against swimming. If you are a gym junkie, don’t fear! You can absolutely exercise before your appointment. - Exfoliation is key!
To achieve that silky smooth feeling, you’ll need to remove the hair that has grown back post treatment. It can be scary to see your hair growing back immediately after your laser treatment. But don’t worry; you just need to use the exfoliation mitt in our laser aftercare pack to gently pull away the hair. Exfoliate 7 days post-treatment and continue to do this 1-2 times a week between treatments. - Reach out anytime for questions.
No question is a silly question! We love to educate our clients about the procedures they are having done. Make sure you ask us all the questions you have and keep us updated if there are any changes. We will always ask you about your sun exposure and medical history prior to your treatments, so please, keep us in the loop!
Side Effects That Subside
- Redness and irritation that is temporary, like mild sunburn, heal within a day.
- The skin may swell around the treated area, but calms down shortly.
- Changes in skin color (slight darkening or lightening, usually temporary) may be observed, which do not persist.
- Mild crusting or scabbing in rare cases can be noticed.
- Your skin may become more sensitive to sunlight if it is left unprotected. So, it requires extra protection.
- Rare cases of blistering or infection can be seen if aftercare isn’t followed.
